The movie-night comparison
FlickRot vs JustWatch: discover a pick or find a stream?
Consider FlickRot when a swipe through trailers helps you build a shortlist on iOS. Start with JustWatch when your main question is what is available in your country and on the services you choose. Both combine discovery, saved titles and viewing information; neither is only a watchlist.

For finding an available way to watch
When JustWatch is the better fit
Start with JustWatch if you already have a film in mind, or if your shortlist must come from a particular set of services. Its provider filters distinguish your selected services, subscriptions, buy/rent and free offers. Our judgment is that this fits a viewer whose main obstacle is access rather than finding a title.
For example, select your country and preferred providers, look up a saved film, then inspect the offer. “My Services” means the providers you select; it should not be read as automatic verification of your paid subscriptions. A rental result is also different from a film included in a subscription you already have.
JustWatch goes beyond locating a stream. Its TV tracking guide documents watched episodes and seasons, progress groups and new-episode notifications. Check notification permissions if this is why you choose it. For people juggling several ongoing shows, that workflow may be more useful than another list of future picks.
For building a shortlist through trailers
When FlickRot is the better fit
Consider FlickRot if you want to browse before you know what to search for. Its released iOS app centers discovery on swiping, while the support guide explains trailer browsing, saving and where-to-watch information. We recommend trying it when a trailer’s atmosphere or performances help you make a choice.
A practical routine is to save a few discoveries into a playlist, return to that smaller selection on movie night and inspect a title’s viewing options. The point is the path from sampling a trailer to choosing a film, not a claim that JustWatch lacks trailers or recommendations.
Device check: FlickRot’s mobile app is available for iPhone and iPad; Android has not been released. If an Android app is essential, JustWatch is an available option.
Country, offer type and paid features matter
Use the correct country in JustWatch: the US guide and UK guide target different local services. FlickRot’s support guide says its TMDB availability data currently defaults to U.S. providers, with broader regional support in progress. If you live elsewhere, this is a meaningful reason to start with a local JustWatch guide.
For either app, verify the provider’s destination page before renting, buying or subscribing. We have not compared offer completeness or confirmed that a particular film is available in your location.
JustWatch’s core service is free, with optional Pro features; streaming subscriptions and rental charges are separate. Its custom-list guide currently describes two free custom lists and up to 100 with Pro. Check the current plan if list capacity is your deciding factor.
JustWatch Pro adds filters such as runtime, more lists and options to hide seen or disliked titles. FlickRot Pro includes unlimited likes/saves and playlist sharing, among other features. Check each current upgrade screen for local pricing and entitlement details; this page does not imply every listed feature is free.
Both tools can organize films. JustWatch’s shared custom lists and FlickRot’s playlists mean this is not a choice between “has lists” and “has no lists.” Test whether the list remains useful when you return to it, and whether its viewing options match your actual services.
Run a small movie-night trial
- Choose a known film and an unfamiliar one. Search the known title in JustWatch; try finding the unfamiliar pick through FlickRot’s trailer feed.
- Save both for later. Reopen the list the next day. Check whether you can distinguish something you liked from something you still intend to watch.
- Verify one viewing option. Match the country, provider and offer type. Confirm the result on the provider’s own page.
- Add a series if TV matters. Test JustWatch’s episode progress and notifications, then the FlickRot workflow you would use for that show.
- Check list sharing and limits. Inspect the actual free/paid boundary, account requirements and data portability before moving your whole list.
This is a suggested trial, not a completed benchmark. We have not measured either app’s recommendation quality, speed or streaming accuracy.
Which should you choose?
Choose FlickRot if trailer discovery is the part you want to improve on iOS. Choose JustWatch if country-specific viewing options, selected-service browsing or series progress are your priority. Using FlickRot to discover a film and JustWatch to check a local offer is also a reasonable routine; no automatic cross-app sync is promised.
