The movie-night guide
Movie watchlist apps for the way you choose films
Published by FlickRot, one of the apps compared below. This guide uses official product descriptions and help pages checked on . The recommendations are editorial judgments about different needs, not results from a hands-on speed or accuracy test.
For trailer-led discovery on an iPhone, consider FlickRot. For finding which service carries a movie you already want to see, start with JustWatch. For keeping a film diary, writing reviews and following other viewers, consider Letterboxd.
All three can help you build a watchlist. The useful question is what you want to do before and after saving a title.
What do you want your watchlist app to help with?
Start with the problem you want to solve:
| Your question | Prioritize | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| “I don’t know what I’m in the mood for.” | A discovery workflow that lets you sample films before committing. | FlickRot |
| “I know the film, but where can I watch it?” | A streaming guide with results for your country and services. | JustWatch |
| “I want to remember what I watched and thought.” | A diary, ratings and reviews. | Letterboxd |
You may have more than one of these needs. You can also use different apps at different stages of movie night.
FlickRot for discovering films through trailers
FlickRot centers its discovery experience on swiping through movie and TV trailers. Its App Store description also describes saving titles and organizing watchlists. The website and support guide use “playlists” for organized groups of saved titles.
Consider that approach if seeing a film’s tone, performances or visual style helps you decide whether to save it. A useful personal test is whether you finish browsing with a few films you want to watch.
Mobile availability: FlickRot’s mobile app is currently iOS-only; an Android version has not been released. If Android is essential, choose an available alternative.
Trailers alone do not distinguish FlickRot from every other watchlist app. JustWatch lists trailers among its features, and Letterboxd’s film-data documentation includes trailers. The reason to consider FlickRot is whether its swipe-first approach suits your habits.
JustWatch for connecting your list to streaming options
JustWatch combines movie and TV discovery with a watchlist and searches for where titles are available. Its official app listing describes service filters, trailers, subscription streaming, rental and purchase offers.
Start here when access is the main obstacle: you already have a film in mind and want to find an available way to watch it. It can also help when you want to browse within services you use.
Set the correct country and check the type of offer. A rental or purchase listing is a different commitment from a title included in a subscription. Before paying, confirm the offer on the provider’s own page. This guide does not verify availability for individual films.
Letterboxd for a watchlist connected to your film diary
Letterboxd supports recording watched films, ratings, reviews, following friends and making lists. Consider it when your interest continues after the credits: you want to remember a reaction, compare your viewing over time or discover films through other people.
Its watchlist documentation explains that titles leave the watchlist when you mark them watched, log, review or rate them. Keep that behavior in mind if you expect one list to preserve both future picks and viewing history.
Letterboxd also includes trailers in its film data and offers streaming-related features. A diary-focused recommendation should not be read as a claim that it lacks discovery tools.
How can you test an app before moving your whole list?
Pick five films: one you already know you want to see, one recommendation from a friend, one unfamiliar title, one rewatch and one you have struggled to find. Then work through these checks:
- Find and save each title. Notice whether the process feels natural enough that you will keep using it.
- Return to the list the next day. Can you find the film you meant to watch without browsing everything again?
- Choose tonight’s film. Try moving from a saved title to a confirmed viewing option.
- Record what happened afterward. If reviews and viewing dates matter to you, check how the app handles them.
- Check the details that could become frustrating later: device support, account requirements, list visibility, export options and the current paid-feature limits.
The point is to test your actual routine. A long feature list matters less if the app makes your most frequent task awkward. These are checks for you to try, not a test already performed by this guide.
Which movie watchlist app should you choose?
Choose by the task you repeat most often. Consider FlickRot if trailers help you build a shortlist, JustWatch if locating a viewing option is your priority, or Letterboxd if keeping a record and discussing films matters most.
